A New Baby / 赤ちゃん誕生

嶺（Japanese = Rei, English = Ray) Stephen Mooney was born, 4:13p.m. November 17th (JST). His weight was 3,562 grams and his height was 52 centimeters.

Tomo went into labor the night/morning before around 4 a.m. and the baby was born the following afternoon a bit after 4 p.m. This means she was in labor and intense pain for 12 hours straight. I was there for all of it (including seeing the baby come out). Tomo's fine now but completely exhausted.

This summer Tomo and I took a trip to Taiwan.

夏休みの台湾旅行

Day 1

The view from our hotel in Taipei...

ホテルからの台北の長め。十数年ぶりの台湾、街を歩くと「だいぶ変わったな〜」と思ったが、上から見ると

やっぱり味わい深い部分が垣間見える。

We found this small temple the first night when we were wondering around the streets near our hotel looking for food.

到着した日の夜、晩ごはんを探しにふらふら歩くとキラキラ輝く中国式寺院発見。

Day 2

We went to the National Palace Museum to have a look at all the ancient Chinese treasures...

２日目、故宮博物館へ。２度目だったが、展示方法が以前よりグレードアップしていておもしろかった。レプリカもだいぶ多いようだったが、細工物の精巧な技術と美しさに驚いた。紀元前２千年まえに作られた陶器に２色の釉薬がかけられていたのにも驚いた。

Day 3

We took a train and bus up north to see the mountains and sea.

３日目、電車とバスを乗り継いで「九分」（正確な漢字ではないが）に行った。

After wondering around for a bit on foot, we found a temple with a huge statue of (we're assuming) Confucius.

すごく暑い日でてくてく山道をあるいた。

After the temple we found a mine built by the Japanese during their occupation. Apparently it was still in use...

作業員（右側、リヤカーを押している男性）の帽子が段ボール箱でかっこよかった。

Tired and hungry we started looking for food...

九分もよりのバス停ふきんの屋台市場。好きな惣菜を６、７種類＋ご飯２人前で３２０円でした。

家の近所にあったらいいのにな〜。

That night, back at our hotel, fireworks suddenly went off. We have no idea why.

その晩、ホテルの裏手でなぜか花火が上がった。しかもかなりたくさん。

(Also, in case we hadn't figured it out by all the young girls in skimpy skirts running around, the parking garage with colored lights let us know we were in the red-light district).

Day 4

We (or at least I) am completely exhausted and sunburnt from the previous day. Tomo arranges to meet one of her friends living in the country in the afternoon.

Until then, we decide to go to the science museum because they have an exhibit I wanted to see.

I was surprised at the sheer size of the place.

４日目。越ちゃんと会う約束をし、午前中は科学博物館へ。サムが見たがった展示...

We couldn't take pictures of the actual exhibit itself, but this is an idea of what was inside... real bodies.

それは、人体展でした。本物の人肉が乾燥して展示されてる。

It started with preserved fetuses in various stages of development and moved on to explain all the various organs and how they functioned.

I actually started feeling faint halfway through and had to stop to catch my breath.

サムには衝撃がありすぎた様。もともと白いのがさらに真っ青になり会場の床にへたりこんで呼吸も苦しそうだったので

早足で肉と肉の間を通り抜け、ほとんど展示も見られず出てきた。こんなんで出産の立ち会いは大丈夫なのか？！

The great thing about being in a new country, is even a simple bus ride is exciting...

バスで越ちゃん家に向かう。暑くて乗り換えの移動がいやだったのでひたすらバスにのる。

After meeting up with Tomo's friend, Koshi-chan, and her two kids, Zen and Sui, we walked to a Nabe restraunt where her husband, Shau-Chi, is waiting.

みんなで火鍋屋さんへ。具材えらび放題で食べ過ぎた。４種類のスープの中で薬膳スープが一番好きでした。

この店も近所にあったらいいのに〜！

After a nice meal, Shau-Chi gives us a ride back home. The sheer number of bikes on the street in Taipei is remarkable.

シャオチーが車でホテルまで送ってくれた。信号で止まるとバイクがたくさん車の前に。十数年前は3,4人乗りバイクが当たり前だったけど今は二人のり以上はあまり見かけない。

Day 5

In the morning we went to the local spice district...

５日目。乾物屋街へ。ドライナッツとフルーツを買いに。ずっと欲しかった菊花茶を買えてよかった。

In the afternoon we meet up with Koshi-chan and her kids again. We eat dumplings...

そのあと、かの有名な小龍包のお店でランチ。おいしかった！しかし、小龍包より鶏スープにより感激。

Then ice-cream...

Then we went to the night market, where Shau-Chi joined us and we ate some more...

夕方シャオチーも合流して屋台街へ。この写真では黒い薬膳スープに入った骨付き豚のスープを飲んでいる。これもあっさりしていて美味。お腹いっぱいなのにがつがつ食べてしまう。

In fact, eating was a major part of this trip...

ラストはトロピカルフルーツ山盛りのかき氷でしめました。

越ちゃん、シャオチー、然くん、粋ちゃんありがとうね。またね！

Day 6

We spend the whole day traveling. Taxi, plane, bus, car... all the way back to Japan.

６日目移動日。羽田から実家の南足柄まで。１３時半の台北発で夜２２時に実家に着く。

Day 7

Back at Tomo's parents house in Minami-ashigarashi (home of Japanese legend, Kintaro). I finally have a chance to meet her sister, brother-in-law, and their two kids. We all went to see a nearby waterfall.

テキサスから夏休み帰国していた姉一家に久々に会えた。夕方、涼を求めて「夕日の滝」へ。山の中は涼しい。

Day 8

We all went to a Ryokan by the ocean in Toi, Shizuoka.

After the beach and an onsen...

それから皆で西伊豆の土肥温泉へ行きました。

(Probably the only time you'll ever see either of us in anything resembling a kimono.)

A feast.

旅館の晩ごはん。おおごちそう！だんだん人数も増えて大家族になってきたな。

Day 9

We went back to the beach (this time with a camera).

土肥海岸はとてもよかった。こぢんまりしたビーチで木陰もたくさんあり、水はきれいだし波も穏やか。なにより良かったのは海岸に自由に入れる温泉があったこと。海で泳ぎ疲れて体が冷えたら温泉で海を見ながらのんびり。極楽！

晩ご飯、エビ尽くしだった。生えびって甘い。

下の、骨の写真はわざわざブログに載せる意味ないと思うけど、サムが「骨付き煮魚をうまく食べられた」記念か。

Day 10

More beach and then back to the parents place...

西伊豆の帰り、三島で高級おいしいうなぎ屋でお昼ご飯でした。おいしすぎた。うなぎ、数ヶ月前からず〜っと食べたかったので念願叶う。やはり穴子とはちがう！（あたりまえだけど）

Day 11

A rare relaxing day with nothing to do...

実家近くでお散歩。この辺はずっと変わりないので歩くと安らぐ。かつては毎日犬の散歩で歩いたところ。山の見える場所はやはり落ち着く。

夏はまだなんですけど

A few weeks ago Tomo and I went to a friends house for homemade pizza and barbeque.

この間、トモと僕は友達の家に行って、庭にある窯で焼いたピザやバーべキューを食べた。

ピザはとてつもなくおいしかったです。ギリシャに行ったような感じでした。

It was a feast.

By now I'm sure everyone has seen pictures of the devastation wrought by the Tsunami following the quake. Cars overturned. Houses carried away. Even whole villages have been wiped out.

Compared to all this, Kashima got off relatively easy.

I've compiled some photographs that friends (Thanks Sean, Brighid and Manu) have taken:

(top left: the tori to the local shrine collapsed. top right: my office. I was actually siting at that table planning a lesson when the quake struck. middle: roads in various state of disrepair. bottom left: tiles fell off of roofs. bottom right: the tsunami, although nowhere near as sever as up north, hit us as well. Here you can see a car buried in sand and a telephone pole that has sunk into the ground.)

Now there is apparently no running water in Kashima. Tomo and I are ok because our house uses well water. As long as we have electricity we'll be fine. Speaking of which, they cut our electricity for a few hours last night as part of a plan. Apparently, they don't have enough to go around. Anyway, we've opened our house to my co-workers to come and use for showering etc. We are still experiencing aftershocks and a big one is predicted.

Tomo and I ventured out yesterday but most everything was shut down. Today, we've begun hearing reports that the supermarkets are opening back up. However, people are still lining up at gas stations where they are rationing out gas, if they have it at all.

There is a lot of conflicting reports and information coming in as far as the power situation and the power plant (about 150 kilometers north of us). Apparently, they are now cooling it down with sea water.

Words can't describe the past few days.

There is a legend of a giant catfish trapped at the center of the earth. This catfish is held there by a giant rock. Whenever the catfish struggles or tries to get free there is an earthquake.

According to the legend, the tip of the rock can actually be seen very near the Kashima shrine. It is said this is why Kashima has so few earthquakes.

Yesterday the catfish was really fighting.

Japan experienced one of its biggest earthquakes in a long time. This was followed by a giant Tsunami. Tomo and I are OK. Our neighbors tile roof collapsed and the inside of our house looks like a bomb went off. But Tomo and I are fine.

鹿嶋市では震度６弱と観測された。地震でゆれ始めた時、家の２階で絵を描いていた。まさかここまでの規模の大地震になるとは思いもよらずしばらく２階で座布団をかぶっていたのだが、尋常でない縦揺れと地震の長さ、そして家中の物が落下して割れる音に恐ろしくなり階段を駆け下りたら歩けないほど揺れていた。家全体が縦に「がんがんがん」と同じリズムで轟音を立てている中外に出たら近所の人々が道のアスファルトに這いつくばっていた。「がらがら」と物が落下する音がし隣家の屋根瓦がまとめて崩れ落ちていた。その後同じような規模の大地震が続けておこった。

家中に散乱したガラスや陶器の破片をほうきで掃きながら地震がおこるたびに外へ走り出た。近所では小火があったようだ。しかし鹿嶋のこの辺りでは幸いにも電気ガスは止まらず。夕飯時には揺れもやや収まってきたので長く調理しないものをつくり食べた。大きな余震があるたびにストーブの火を消した。近所の小学校や図書館でマイクを使って人々を誘導する声が夜７時くらいまで聞こえていた。海辺に家のある人々が避難してきていたのかもしれない。

A Great Day

Last Sunday was a great day.

先週日曜日2月13日、サムはいい事がたくさんありました。朝起きて、布団を外に干していたら「ポストに何か入っている」とサムの声。みてみたら、日本語能力試験1級に合格の通知でした。二人とも絶対に合格していないと思っていたので正直すごく驚いた。しかしよく見てみるとかなりぎりぎりの点数での通過。でも合格は合格なので良しです。次はなんの目標に向かって日本語を勉強していくのでしょうか。なにか楽しそうな日本語検定試験があったらどなたかお知らせください。

It started in the morning when I noticed a slip of paper in the mail box.

It was the results of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test that I had taken last December.

I had taken level one, the most difficult level, so I was sure I didn't pass. But I was eager to see how close I came...

...wait? I actually passed!?!

After this bit of good news, it was time to participate in the 10th Annual Foreigner's Japanese Speech Contest, sponsored by the Kashima International Exchange Association.

合格通知をもらった日は折しも鹿嶋市主催のスピーチコンテストの日でした。昨年サムの同僚が参加していたのを見に行き、たくさん「景品」をもらっていたのを見て、参加しました。（景品のキノコは特に魅力でした）景品目当てとはいえ、サムはこのスピーチ原稿作成に１２月からとりかかり、1月からは朝晩音読するという気合いの入りようでした。

以下、5分間のスピーチ原稿です

初めて学んだ日本の言葉

サム・ムーニー

こんにちは皆さん、サム・ムーニーです。七年前、２００４年の春、日本に来ました。

英会話学校で仕事を得て、一、二年ぐらい滞在の予定でした。

始めてきたとき全く日本語が分かりませんでした。

アメリカでは会社の人から「日本人は中学校の時から英語を習い始めているので、皆ある程度、英語が分かりますよ」といわれました。

「教えるのは英語だし、日常生活にも英語を使って大丈夫です」と。

でも、それはウソでした。

日本に着いたときに気がつきました。

最初の日、会社の人が僕と数人の新規採用者をホテルに連れていて、

「明日迎えに来る」と言って去りました。

残されたのは外国人だけでした。

わくわくしました。

他の外国人たちは外に出てバーに行こうと言い出しました。

ある外国人は日本語を少し話せて、この冒険を先導すると申し出ました。

でも僕は行きませんでした。

お酒はあまり好きじゃないし、一人で食事をする場所を見つけてみようと思いました。

ホテルの周りを歩き回ったのですが、日本語の看板しか見つかりせんでした。

何が何だかさっぱり分かりませんでした。

周りの数人に聞きましました

“Excuse me?”

でも、無視されました。

パニックの状態でした。

「誰でも英語が話せるだろう」と思っていた僕はバカでした。

なぜなら、ここは別の国だから当然なのです。

それに気づいて、もっとだめな気分になりました。

おなかがすいて、すいて、どこへ食べられるか、分かりませんでした。

「ホテルに戻ろうか、今夜はご飯抜きにするしかない」と思ったところ、…助かりました。

道の向こうにあの黄色い「M」マークを発見しました。

マクドナルドでした。

安心しました。

カウンターに行くと、店員さんのあせる様子が見えました。

“Uh, can I get a cheese burger please?”

反応がありませんでした。店員さんは固まっていました。

“Uh, a cheese burger.”

店員さんの顔に汗が噴出しました。

壁に大きいハンバーガの写真があったので、僕はそれを指しながら、もう一度言いました。

“Cheese burger.” “One cheese burger.”

バカの一つ覚えのように言っている自分がすごく恥ずかしかったです。

でも、お腹がすいてしまって、しょうがありませんでした。

“Cheese burger, please.”

やっと、分かってくれて、食べることが出来ました。

でも、日本語を全く知らない僕は一年日本に住み続けるのは無理だと思いました。

自分はダメだという気分でした。

ところが次の朝、救いの神が現れました。

日本語が少し話せるあの外国人が話していました。

「日本に暮らしたいなら必要なのは一つの言葉だけだ」と言いました。

「この言葉が分かったら、“Please, Thank you, Excuse me, I’m sorry, などなど全部が言えるようになりますよ」と。

それを聞くとみんな、静かになって耳をそばだてました。

彼は言いました。“Sumimasen,だ” と。　

すみません。

その言葉を知ってからというもの何かが変わりました。

道に迷っている時「すみません」と言うと、もう無視されません。

店に入ってメニューを指しながら、「すみません」と言うと注文でます。

お会計したいとき「すみません」。

困ったときには、この言葉でなん度も助けられました。

本当に魔法のような言葉です。

最後に、皆さんに僕の適当なスピーチをお聞かせして、本当に、　

…すみません。

ご清聴ありがとうございました。

This speech went over really well and I was mentioned by name and even had part of my speech quoted in both the local paper and the local section of the a major national paper.

スピーチは、大盛況でした。中高生50人の投票による審査員賞をもらいました。他の外国人の方々のスピーチもどれもすばらしかったです。日本に来て苦労した話、特にアジア系の国から来た外国人たちは来日そうそうから地域に密着して生活していかねばならなかった大変さがひしひしと伝わってくるようなスピーチでした。聴衆は知り合いや大人の人が多かったですが、限られた行動範囲で視野が狭くなりがちな子供達にこそ聴かせたいスピーチでした。

In the end, everyone who participated got a prize. Mine was for best humor.

In addition to this I also got the "best speech" prize as chosen by the Jr. High and Highschool students in the audience. Tomo assures me this is much better than the "best speech" as chosen by the Association members themselves.

お正月／New Years

Tomo and I spent the new years at her parents house again this year.

年末年始の事。31日サムと朋は実家のある神奈川に帰省しました。

A 15 min. walk, a two hour bus ride, a 2 hour train ride and another 20 min. walk and we arrived sometime around 7 pm on the 31st.

鹿嶋から歩いたりバスに乗ったりして５時間ようやく到着。（上の写真は乗り換えの駅のホームで「トイレにいきたいけど見つからないサム」）

On New Years morning we all set off to the local shrine to pay our respects. This was a bit of a hike as well, but that (for me) is the point.元日、近所の大雄山最乗寺へおまいり。父の畑から山の中を一時間弱歩く。

The next day Tomo and I went hiking at a nearby mountain...

正月２日目には箱根の浅間山へハイキング。浅間山にハイカーはまったく無かったが、箱根駅伝の応援＆見学客でごったがえした箱根登山線はひどかった。東京でもあんなラッシュにおめにかかったことはない！来年は実家から自転車で行ける範囲の山に登ろうと固く決意。

And the whole time we ate like royalty.

お正月のごちそう。海の幸いっぱいです。おいしかった！！！

I can only hope 2011 will be half as great as 2010.

今年も明るく楽しく忍耐でがんばろう。

展覧会報告・Exhibition Report

Last Monday was the opening of Tomo's gallery exhibition. It took place in Aoki Gallery, a small gallery in Ginza with a long history.

6日間の個展、修了しました。まとまった形で作品を発表したのは初めてだったので不安が

大きかったのですが、サムや青木ギャラリーのオーナー夫婦のサポートによりつつがなく展示を終えました。目を酷使しながら額縁を制作してくれたお父さん、お祝いに来てくださったみなさん、ふらりと立ち寄ってくださった方々、いつも遠くから応援してくれる友達たち、地元のみなさん、本当にどうもありがとうございました。

She took a two hour bus ride everyday to be at the gallery during the exhibition. However, even then she still missed people who came during her lunch break etc.

Of course I can't speak for her, but from my perspective the exhibition was a great success. A lot of people came, she sold some work, and she received a lot of compliments and positive feedback from her peers and other respected artists. So, I would like to say thank you to everyone who came and helped make this success possible.

いままでで一番長い一週間でした。オープンした月曜日↑から最終日の土曜日↓まで一ヶ月ぐらい経った気分でした。

Finally, for those people living in other parts of the world, who couldn't come but wanted to be there, I took a quick video. I started shooting out on the busy Ginza street and then move to the gallery in order to give a sense of location and atmosphere. Also, I shot this on a Monday morning, opening day, before anyone had arrived.

The end of summer... 夏の終わり

It's still insanely hot out, but tomorrow school officially starts so this can only mean... it's the end of summer. :(

But before I get back to work, I wanted to note two good things that happened last week.

#1: Thanks to Tomo's sister and brother in law we got a bread machine...

パン焼き機！！ついに来た！姉と旦那さんからの結婚祝いとしていただきました！記念すべき第一斤めの写真です。こわごわ使ってるところ。あまりのおいしさに「おいし〜い」を３連発ぐらいしながら二人で食べた。パンのおかずは魚。シンプルに蒸してみた。こちらも二人からの結婚祝いの圧力釜で調理。おかげさまで乏しい調理器具が一気にグレードアップした。何度かハンドメイドパンを作ってみて失敗している私にはパン焼き機は本当に不思議だった。分量の粉と水を入れて待つ事数時間でふわふわもちもちカリッなパンが出来ている。研究した人すごい。苦労したろうな〜。世の中にはすごい人達がいるもんだ。感動した。

Mmmm... bread (just the smell alone is enough).

#2: Fireworks.

It was the same as last year. This year instead of dealing with the traffic, we started walking from our house a bit after it started taking pictures along the way. ...we arrived at the river just in time to see the grand finally.

そして、夏の終わりの花火大会。徒歩一時間ほどの道のりをおにぎりを食べながら歩いた。会場の霞ヶ浦のほとりに着いたのはちょうどファイナルの始まる直前。目の前のボートから打ち上げられるものすごい迫力の花火を満喫した。

Summer vacation 夏休み

This summer we had a nice low key relaxing time visiting friends and family.

The first week we went back to Tomo's parents place. On the way there we stopped and spent the afternoon at one of Tomo's art-school friend's apartment where she could catch up with everyone.

今年の夏休みはどうしようか？と２ヶ月前からうっすらと考えつつ...気がついたらもう夏休みが始まってしまいました。

無計画のまま突入した夏休み前半、東京で友人達と久々の再会をした後、神奈川の実家でのんびりすごした。

わたしは三日間「キャンディキャンディ」の愛蔵版を引っ張りだしてきて爆読した。何度読んでもいいね〜。70年代の少女漫画は「テーマが壮大過ぎる」ところがいい。サムは電子辞書片手に池澤夏樹に挑戦中。半日で２ページ進む...みたい。今年中に読み終わるといいね！

両親が結婚のお祝いに近所の和食屋さんでごちそうしてくれました。野菜を中心にした創作料理風で、丁寧な下ごしらえと

繊細な味付けがとてもすばらしい心のこもった料理だった。ただひとつ、不思議だったことが、個室で誰も見ていないはずなのに、全員が一皿をすっかり食べ終えたらすかさず次の皿が運ばれてくる、その恐ろしいまでの絶妙なタイミングの繰り返しに「どこかに監視カメラがあるのでは..」と皆であとで話した。

いつもの父の畑。また今年もスイカがいっぱいだった。小玉スイカは甘くてすごくおいしかった。

After this excursion we went back home for a few days of drawing manga (sam) cleaning the house (tomo) and hanging out at the beach (sam and tomo).

Then it was off to Hinoharamura, a small village in the mountains where we spent a few days camping with Masako, her husband Terry, and their two daughters, Tamae and Akari.

夏休み後半は友人一家と檜原村へ。鹿嶋から電車とバスを乗り継いで６時間。山深い場所に元小学校を改装した公営宿舎に滞在。小学校の小さな校庭にはバーベキュースペースもあり、寝る場所は元教室。周囲10km以内にはスーパーやコンビニもない。周囲360度すべて山、これでも東京都。川遊びをしたり薪で火を起こしてバーベキューやカレーを作って食べたり、みんなで大きなお風呂に入ったり、花火をしたり、とても楽しかった！夏休み最高。

I thought I wrote about it here before, but apparently I didn't.

Last Christmas, I proposed to Tomo...

皆さま、このたび私たち結婚いたしました。結婚式もせず、ブログで発表とは、なんとも気楽なもので恐縮です。サムが「ブログで結婚報告しよう」といいながらせっせと写真を選んだり書き込んだりして完成したこのブログに私が後付けでコメント入れているのですが、「なんだか恥ずかしい写真選んだなあ...」というのが正直なところです。さらりと軽く流して見てやってください。

Then, last month, we went to look at wedding rings and found a nice pair. They would have to be custom made to fit our fingers so we couldn't walk away with them right away... (I don't know why I thought that would have been possible). Anyway, last weekend the rings arrived in the mail. We tried them on, and they fit.

入籍のタイミングはいつでもよかったので、結局、注文した指輪の出来上がった日に入籍することになりました。

...so we decided to get married that day, July 18th. It was the day before Ocean Day, a national holiday. This was convenient because now the anniversary will be easy to remember (and I should always have the day off to celebrate). Tomo immediately went to work translating my birth certificate and we went down to the city office and handed everything in. It was a Sunday so they were closed, but there was one old man who was working behind a window. We handed our paperwork to him. おめでとうございます(congratulations), was all he said.

日曜日だったので婚姻届は市役所の宿直室に提出しました。宿直室の窓口のおじさんが電話中だったので直接ドアを開けて

宿直室に入って行こうとしたら、中に別のおじさんがテレビの前で「飲んだくれ」ていたので驚いた。なので、そのままドアを閉め、窓口のちゃんとしたおじさんが電話が終わるのを待った。国際結婚のためかなり手間取ってそろえた大事な書類ばかりだったので「だいじょうぶかな〜」と少し思った。

After handing in the paper work we went to the local shrine, and then to a fancy restaurant.

We ordered the chief's special, which started off with sushi...

市役所の後、鹿島神宮に挨拶に。その後、漁師っぽい定食屋に行く予定だったが「はまぐりが売り切れたので休業中」とのことで、結局とても高級な天ぷら屋さんで食事をしました。とにかく高級でした。写真を見てください。ちなみに、サムは「食事はsushiで始まって...」と書いていますが、「sushi」ではなく「sashimi」です。いつも間違えているな...

天ぷら盛り合わせのデザートはスイカでした。...食べ合わせって、うなぎとうめぼし、天ぷらとスイカ、だったっけ？ま、いいか。

In order to avoid a fuss, I wasn't really planning on telling anyone about it. But, of course, one of the homeroom teachers at my Elementary school noticed my ring. The next day they gave us a cake.

サムの教えている小学校の先生方が一学期最後の日にケーキをくださいました！おいしかったです。私の名前はどうやって知ったんだろう。その心づかいがとてもうれしかったです。

Then, my company also found out and we got flowers....きれいなバラの花束とメッセージカードもありがとうございました。

We still, haven't told our parents yet, but that's what blogs are for. ...right?

わたしはさっき電話したよ、日本の両親には。ということで、以上、恥ずかしい報告でした。あ、そうそう！Mooney朋美（ムーニーともみ）に名前が変わりました。今後ともサムともども、どうぞよろしくお願い致します。thank you!

I don't have much to say, but it's been a while so I thought I'd throw a few pictures up here.

The first is a picture I had Tomo take of myself. At one point, I was thinking of writing a book called, "Big in Japan." This would have been the cover... ^_^!

陶芸仲間のおばちゃんのおすすめトンカツ屋さんに行きました。ごはんとみそ汁が選べて食べ放題。キャベツも食べ放題、ドレッシングやソースもおいしくて数種類ある。家ではトンカツしないので数年ぶりにトンカツ食べた気がした。ここは、トンカツソースが個性的。ゴマがすり鉢に入って出てくる。それをトンカツを待っている間に「ゴリゴリ」する。それに備え付けのソースを入れて混ぜる。こういうの、「日本人好きだよね〜」というのがアフロさんのコメント。こういうの「めんどくさい。なんでわざわざ客にやらせるんだ。」って思うんだろうね〜多くのアメリカ人は、というのがわたしのコメント、でした。

For those of you in the english speaking world, Tomo is making fun of my hair and talking about food. I'm just embarrassed that my arms are so skinny. Maybe I should have eaten more.

先日、上海（中国）のテレビCFアニメをつくりました。商品はグリコの子供向けお菓子。わたしはストーリー企画＆アニメーション背景イラストを担当。自分の小さな机の上でつくったものが動き出すのが、まるで魔法のようでアニメって不思議だな〜といつも思う。北京語なのでなにを言っているかわからないけど見てみてください。

Below you will find two commercials Tomo helped make (storyboards and backgrounds). Unfortunately they're Chinese so we wont be able to see them over here... (Wait a minute, actually, that's probably a good thing). ...and please don't ask what they are saying.

春になり、庭に変な生き物が生えてきました。というわけではなく、

陶芸で変な人形つくってみました...という報告。色が思ったより出なかったので今回の窯出しはがっかりだった。「鮮やかに色でまっせ」と、評判のアメリカ製の専用絵の具をわざわざ買ったのに...。最近大きいサイズの絵と闘っているためそちらにかまけて陶芸は休みがち。続けることに意義がある！（自分叱咤）喝！（おおげさ）

Strange creatures have appeared in our garden this spring. Or, maybe it's just Tomo's latest pottery creation. She went to all the trouble of buying highly rated American pottery paint but, as you can see, the colors turned out muted and muddy.

However, recently Tomo's been ditching her pottery classes and concentrating on her oil painting. She's got a huge canvas in her room that she wont let me look at.

She goes in and out like she's in a battle...

サム新聞ニュースに！

サムが市の広報にのりました。「鹿嶋市は教育にこんなに力いれてますよ〜」という記事みたい。でも、たしか一年前もまったく同じ写真（そのときはモノクロだった）が広報に掲載されたような...。鹿嶋市は広報の写真には力入れてないみたいだ。ま、どうでもいいけど。先日は茨城NHKのニュースにも出ちゃったし（内容はノーコメント）よかったね。

I got my picture in the news paper. Unfortunately, the article itself has little to do with me. "Look at us, we're pouring lots of money into education (We're even paying this gaijin's salary)," seems to be the thrust of the article. I actually think they had a similar article last year with the exact same photo of me, but I can't really remember.

I was also interviewed (in Japanese) by a local TV news crew and appeared on the local news here recently but for something completely different. (I'll update my other blog with that news within the next few weeks).

I thought spring was here a month ago when we had one warm day... It's still cold, but the cherry blossoms bloomed last weekend. Does this make it official?

Tomo and I celebrated by going to a local park and eating doughnuts Sunday morning... (romantic... ^_^;)

きれいな巻き寿司！（ちょっとかじってあるけど）サムが小学校の校長先生からいただいてきたもので、どなたかの手作りらしい。この手のこんだ巻き寿司はこの辺の道の駅でも売られているのを見た事がある。茨城の郷土料理なのかな？もらって来た時、お赤飯と一緒に折り詰めになってたから、「ハレの日」の料理なのかも。３月はさよならのお祝いの多い時期だけどこんなきれいなお寿司食べたら悲しい気分もどこへやら、かも！？

2/19金曜日はサムの誕生日でした。

仕事先ですごく素敵なプレゼントをたくさんもらってきた。中でも感動したのは、小学４年生のクラスの子たちがリコーダーとコーラスで「happy birthday~」と音楽のプレゼントをくれた事。かわいいな。私自身はなんだかまとまりのないグッズを５品プレゼントして夕飯に「焼き鳥」をたくさんつくった。翌日はインド料理屋にて仕事仲間や友人達による「サプライズパーティ」だった。会場まで誘導するのが私の任務だったのだが、行きつけのインド屋さんなので「絶対にバレていない」と確信していた。が！！じつは前日うっかり口を滑らせた人がいるらしく本人はちょっと予想していたらしい...む〜。パーティはとてもとても楽しかった。みんなでくだらないことをぺちゃくちゃしゃべってお腹いっぱい食べて飲んだ。サムの絵入りサプライズケーキも最高でした。誕生日っていいな！

In case you can't read japanese, last friday was my birthday. I received lots of chocolate from my co-workers and one of my kids classes actually remembered and sang me a song. That night, Tomo made Yakitori (barbecue chicken) and gave me a tone of presents. Then, the next day everyone at work threw a "surprise" party at my favorite Indian restaurant.

...this might have been the best birthday ever. So, thanks to everyone who made it happen. ;)

雪 ...snow

先週、鹿嶋に雪が降りました！積もるのは３年ぶりだと茨城ニュースで言っていました。わたしも久しぶりに雪をみてうれしかった。とてもきれいでした。冬はいいな〜！翌日はよい天気で午後にはすっかり溶けてしまったけど。もっと雪ふれっ（雪国の人、すみません）

...so, yeah. It snowed in Kashima last week. This is a picture of the palm tree in our yard covered with snow. It was all melted by noon, but I've never seen Tomo so excited.

お正月はいつものように実家にかえりました。

For the new years celebration we went to visit Tomo's parents in Kanagawa...

１日には最乗寺におまいりし、たい焼きを食べ、鐘をつきました。

今年も良い一年でありますように。

On New Years Day we visited the local temple (which is quite large) to prey for a good year.

護摩をたいてもらう受付にてサムと父母。年末からお正月にかけて毎日晴天でした。おみくじは父とサムは大吉母とわたしは吉でした。護摩とは別に私たち用のお守りをふたつ買いました。

おまいりの翌日は箱根の山にハイキングへ。小涌谷で登山電車を降り、滝のある登り口から浅間山（せんげんやま）頂上へ３０分。昼食を食べ箱根湯本まで２時間ゆるい下りをのんびりいった。コースは広々としていてすれ違う人もほとんどなく、途中相模湾が見えたりいままで行ったハイキングコースのなかでも最高だった。箱根湯本では天山という露天風呂によった。

The next day we went hiking in the mountains. We were practically the only people on the mountain. We passed maybe two or three other hikers the whole time... Very nice. After this we hit an Onsen.

...というわけで、あっというまのお正月でした。ジャンプ！

It was a great New Year's celebration.

クリスマス　Christmas

12/25は大洗水族館に行った。鹿嶋からは海沿いに車で一時間くらい行ったところにある。予想以上にそれぞれの水槽が大きくてさまざまな魚達が群れをなして泳いでいるところを見る事ができた。サメの種類がやたら豊富で、サメの卵を触らせてくれるコーナーがあったり「この水族館のサメの多くはここで孵化させたものです」などかいてあったりサメの歯がお土産物としてたくさん売られていたり。ほかの水族館でもそうなのかな？

Yesterday (Christmas Day) we went to a local (one hour north by car) aquarium. It was also a place where they breed sharks so we got to see a lot of those...

They had a lot of huge tanks with many varieties of local fish swimming around... (can you see the sharks?)

They also had a lot of Manbos (which my dictionary translates as Head Fish or an Ocean Sun Fish).

Anyway, The aquarium wasn't crowded at all and we had a nice relaxing time.

Although to be honest, I was a little disturbed by all the "Hmm... that looks Yummy!" comments coming from Tomo. (and they even had a sushi restaurant attached to the front that you have to walk past before you can enter).

秋から冬へ

しばらく更新しないあいだに私がいちばん好きな季節「秋から冬へのあいだ」になりました。ストーブも出したし薬缶ものせたし湯たんぽも買ったし万事準備OK。

We haven't updated in a while, so apologies for that.

The season, or time, between Fall and Winter is apparently Tomo's favorite. We got out the propane stove and hot-water bottles and made preparations for the cold...

１１月頃はまだ暖かかったので休日に鹿嶋漁港まで絵を描きにいったり...

Also, back in November when it was still a bit warm, we went to the local dock to sketch/photograph the fishing boats.

鹿島神宮の昭和な土産物屋さんをはしごしたり（何も買わないのに）しました。

We also visited an old souvenir shop at the local shrine (although we didn't buy anything).

About two weeks ago Tomo got another fruit and vegetable pack from her father. It included... Mikans! Fall is officially here.

Also, when I shared these with the people at work they all commented about how unusually good they were and when I told everybody they were from Tomo's father in 南足柄 (Minamiashigara) I learned that that place is famous for Mikans...

９月のごはん

９月はいただきもの野菜と自作野菜だけで、毎日ごはんがつくれました(もちろん魚肉乳は買ったけど）。いま庭では人参、モロヘイヤ、バジル、オクラ、トマト、しそが収穫できます。夏の野菜ばかりだけどまだがんばってくれています。そろそろ青菜でもつくろうかな。人参はかたちが不揃いだけど大きくなるのに時間がかかったせいか味が濃くておいしい。１１月にはサツマイモを掘ってみる予定。植えたきり放置しているのであまり期待はできないけど...

父作「インカのめざめ（じゃがいも）」と庭の人参のカレーライス。らっきょうは今年はじめて作ってみた。

ミートソースと冷や奴

しゅうまい、さんま。ここ鹿嶋でサンマは今までの人生で最安値だと思う。一匹５０円〜８０円。

かぼちゃポタージュスープ、かぼちゃサラダ。父カボチャを一個解体したのでこの頃は毎日何にでもカボチャを入れて食べていた。サムは「カボチャしかこの家にはないの？」と言っていた。

とり肉グリル、ひよこ豆とトマトとバジルのサラダ、根菜汁。それから、この日はパンを焼いてみた。ふくらみも悪いしへたくそなんだけどやはり粉とイーストだけの単純なパンはおいしい。

この手前の器は清水焼です。サムの父母にいただいた京都みやげ。女性の作家さんの作品だが軽くて大きさも形もとても使いやすい。料理が好きな人なのかもしれないな。

鮭、冷や奴、かぼちゃ煮、バジルこの日はメインがないので品数がおおい。内容はかなり質素。

鹿嶋のお祭り

先週の月火曜日に鹿島神宮のお祭りがあった。参道と境内の入り口にたくさんの屋台がならんでいつもは静かな神宮もだいぶにぎやかだった。初日は提灯を火に焼べたりする儀式っぽい大事な日だったらしいが私たちは２日目の夜に行ったので２台の山車を見ただけだった。晩ご飯を食べてから出かけたので屋台でなにも買わずにぶらぶらして家に戻った。ちょっとにぎやかな夜の散歩になった。

Fireworks! (花火）

Yesterday, Tomo and I went to the local fireworks festival...

That dot above her head is the moon, to give you a sense of scale.

Anyway, they started by lighting the lake on fire...

Then, things started exploding in the sky...

...by the end of the night the whole sky was raining fire.

This was by far and away the best fireworks show I've ever seen. These pictures don't even begin to do justice to the scale of it all.

Vacation! 休み！

７月３１日から２週間、アメリカのアイダホ、ボイジから家族３人が遊びに来てくれました。２週間だけだったけど５人家族になれてすごく楽しかった！みんなで東京に行ったり海や温泉にいったり家でアメリカ料理をごちそうになったりポーカーをやったり散歩したり。とてもよい夏休みだった！！以下↓滞在中の記録。by tomo and sam

鹿嶋（Kashima）

7-31（金）My parents arrived in Japan around 5 in the evening… They were waiting for me at the bus stop when I got off work.

潮来バスターミナルまで軽自動車でサムが迎えに行った。あまりにも小さい車で迎えに来たから皆びっくりしたかも？

お父さん弟、サムの３人はそれぞれ２m近い身長。４人は軽自動車にぎゅうぎゅう詰めにされて家に到着した。

8-1（土）One of the first things we did was go out to the country side and look at the rice fields around here.

8-2（日）Then it was into the forest to pay our respects to one of the oldest shrines in Kanto area(around Tokyo) …

東京（Tokyo）

8-3（月）The Grand tour begins with a stop at Studio Ghibli. We spent about 2 and a half days in Tokyo.

みんな宮崎駿作品が大好きなのでジブリ美術館に行きました。お父さんのお気に入りは「もののけ姫」と「千と千尋の〜」弟は「紅の豚」わたしはやっぱり「となりのトトロ」かなあ。それから..えーと、サムはなんだっけ？

Dinner at a little dive tucked away under the train tracks...

上野アメ横のガード下の「焼きトン」屋さんにて。焼き鳥だと思って食べてたら豚味だった。ビールの値段が高くてみんなびっくりでした。ちなみにアメリカはビールが安いので発泡酒とかいうものは存在しないらしい。いいな。

京都（Kyoto）

8-5（水）Then it was off to Kyoto for about another two days…

広島／宮島（Hiroshima/Miyajima）

8-7（金）From Kyoto we went to Hiroshima for one night. The highlight of the trip for me was visiting Miyajima, an island so sacred the gate was built on the water…

Also, Mom had a chance encounter with a fellow bernina dealer.

...広島の街角で文化交流（？）したりしました。

Anyway, the island may be sacred, but the deer sure were rude. Here, you can see one taking my tour guide map.

宮島の鹿は奈良の鹿のように「おじぎをすればせんべいをもらえる」という良きシステムを持たないので、観光客の地図を強奪して食べるしか生き延びるすべがないのかも。（おおげさか）宮島で配られる地図は普通の紙製かな？インクとか大豆インクかな？おなか平気なのかな？....ちなみに鹿島神宮の鹿は囲いに入っていて時間になると係の人に大量の草をもらっていた。どこの鹿がいちばん幸せかな？どこでもない？

大阪（Osaka）

8-9（日）After Hiroshima it was Osaka, where we visited the Castle and I almost got into an argument with a taxi driver who wanted to drop us off in the middle of nowhere (surviving this experience was definite proof that my Japanese skills had improved quite a bit… level up, +10).

朋は今回の旅行では東京までの同行でした。上野でサム一家と別れた時、サムが妙に不安そうだったのは自信のない（？）日本語で家族を連れてあちこち旅行するのが不安だったせいだったのか。日本語上達してよかったね。最近「グン」と上達したとなんどもうれしそうに話すよね〜。語学ってあるとき突然上達する感じ（急によく聞こえるようになるとか）がすごく不思議だよね。わたしがまったく英語を使わないのでご迷惑おかけします。今後とも更なる「グン」を期待してます。

移動は新幹線でした。ちなみにアイダホには電車がないらしい！みんな旅疲れって顔してますの。

鹿嶋（Kashima）again

8-10（月）Finally, home (for me). Everyone was exhausted from the trip, so for the next few days we just relaxed. Fortunately, Tomo’s father sent us a bunch of fresh vegetables he had grown in his garden and we ate like kings… (or Emperors who like Japanese food).

わたしの父がみんなの滞在に合わせてお手製野菜をたっぷり送ってくれました。

サムのお母さんはトマトや野菜サラダが大好きなのでたくさん食卓に出せてよかった。生姜やミョウガ、オクラは冷や奴にゴーヤもラーメンに入れて出したりしてひととおり夏の新鮮和野菜を食べてもらった。みんななんでもよく食べてくれました。でも弟が生のトマトがダメだった事を後で知った。ごめんね〜冷製トマトパスタとか出しちゃったよ。

There was also the local beach...

銚子（Choshi）

うわさの（？）銚子電鉄に乗った。車両よりそれぞれの駅舎の様子が素敵だった。５０年前はすてきな避暑地だったのだろうな。帰路、ボランティアの電鉄名物ガイドさんのいる車両に乗り合わせた。汗だくでパフォーマンスする姿に地元を大事にする気持ちが伝わってきた。体に気をつけてこれからも頑張って続けてほしい。

8-13（木）We decided to go to an onsen on Thursday… It was one of those, the journy is more important than the destination outings… But the onsen was nice.その後回転寿しに行きました。みんな案の定チョコレートケーキに反応していた。寿司屋でチョコレートケーキ...

8-14（金）Everyone playing poker the last night... (guess who's winning).

前の晩に教わったポーカー、初日は一勝もあげられず。最終日はやたら勝った。...あ、もしかして勝たせてもらったのかな？ありがとうございました。

The rainy season has officially ended as of a few days ago, and the flowers are full of color after all the water they just drank...

And, in no connection to anything, here is a picture of a row of houses (more like shacks) that Tomo and I pass every time we walk to the super market. I'm always amazed by how small and run down they look on the outside (almost like they belong in a third world country) and yet in the evening, every time we pass by, there are always luxury cars parked out in front...

くわがたいた (Beetle)

庭にくわがたがいた。感動した。くわがたといえば山で目を皿のようにしながら探しても一夏に一匹いるかいないかのヤツだと思っていたので、朝起きたら庭のつっかけサンダルにしがいみついていたのには驚いた。いいのかそれで！くわがたとして！写真は、くわがたらしさが出るように木に移動させていただきました。

Apparently these Stage Beetles are hard to find, even in the mountains. But this guy was right in our garden. Ah, nature...

近所を散歩中にすごいやつを見つけた。手すりを噛んでる木。じゃまなものは避けずに飲み込むべし！...ってかんじか。We were out for a walk one day when we stumbled across this fence eating tree... Nature is scary.

シソ、二十日大根、ルッコラ、わけぎ、トマト、バジル、ミニ人参、かぼちゃ、冬瓜を植えました。肥えた土ではないので発育は遅め。植えても消えてしまう（たぶん芽を虫が食べてしまう）ものも多い。二十日大根、ルッコラは毎日食べられる量ができました。無農薬なので虫食い穴だらけの葉だけど、とって１５分で食卓に並ぶので新鮮なのがなにより最高。庭に野菜を作ると便利でいい！父作の「ぼかし肥料」のおかげで味も濃くておいしいです。最近は雨がちで、トマトは疫病にかかってしまった。せっかく青い実がたくさんついているのに残念。この間となりのおじさんに余ったサツマイモ苗を１０本もらったので奥のフェンスのあたりに植えてみた。難しい野菜は手に負えないので種をまいたら出来るような青菜を中心に作っていきたい。

...uh. Tomo's writing all about the stuff she's growing in the garden. All I know about this is that it taste good. :)

This and the picture below are of the snacks we eat at night while reading books or watching movies.

陶芸の上野さんの畑でとれたグミ。かわいい。ちょっと酸っぱかった。

もりそば（温つゆで）

Soba

根菜汁、ペンネ、ミートピザトースト。

こういうめちゃくちゃな組み合わせが結構おおい。

フライドチキン、豆腐、じゃがいもみそ汁

鶏だんごスープ、にら焼き、ポテトサラダ、おくら冷や奴

In America they fry potatoes. In Japan they fry fish.

(both taste good, but I actually prefer the fish).

The sushi on the left (which you can't really see because it's covered by green stuff) we actually have quite a lot. I've started to really like it.

梅雨　(The Rainy Season)

I hesitate to post this (espiceally since the last post was a big picture of a rose), but it`s the rainy season in Japan. Unfortunately, the photo doesn't do justice to the intensity of the colors. Perhaps the best rainbow I've ever seen. I felt like I was a kid again seeing one for the first time. It was that intense.

庭に生えてたバラがいきなり咲いた。あたまが重くてだらんと前のめりになったかんじがすごくバラっぽくてよかったのに、大家さんが訪問時にビニールひもでビシッと壁に固定してしまった。あ〜。...その後、ヒモは取らせていただきましたよ、大家さん。

Roses suddenly bloomed in our garden. Never in a million years would I have ever even conceived that I would one day have a rose garden (Although, technically its not a rose garden, just a garden with roses in it)...

月〜水の朝ご飯

サムが小学校に行くときは朝が早いのでいつもこれ。左上からシリアル＆グラノーラ、水、チーズパン（ケチャプはこの日だけ）わたしは本当はごはんがいいのだけど、おかずを作る時間の余裕がない。ごはんには納豆と卵がいいと思うけどサムは両方ダメだし。佃煮とかぬか漬けとかあったらそれだけでいいのだけどなぜか保存食系はいつも冷蔵庫に入っていない。朝のごはん食ってみんな何のおかずで食べるんだろう。

Here`s breakfast. (...a subject about which Tomo apparently has a lot to say).

台所の窓をがらっとあけると見える景色です。日が沈む時間はすごくきれい。窓のすぐそばにはフェンスがあって、その上を灰色のデブ猫が通ります。通るときには横目で無言。たまに機嫌がいいと「にゃっ」と言います。

Here is the view from our kitchen. I think Tomo included it because she wanted to talk about the fat grey cat that occasionally walks by (along a fence you can`t see in this photo).

この４コマ漫画を描いた頃（５月）、毎日毎日「黒い毛虫」を１０匹ぐらい踏みつぶして殺してました。普段はけっこう放っておくのですが駆除しないと追いつかないぐらい異常な大量発生でした。

ゴールデンウィーク

歩いて５分ぐらいのところにある鹿島神宮へはじめていきました。関東地方でいちばん古い神社だそうです。鹿を奉ってあるそう。生きてる鹿も境内に飼育されてました。鹿に近づいたら「グヒーっ」と言われた。鹿ってへんな声で鳴くんだな。

Just five minutes by foot from our house (in the opposite direction of the sea) is one of the oldest shrines in Japan.

鹿島神宮参道の商店街は２０メートルおきに七福神が立ってます。

Tomo makes a new friend.

鹿モノだけじゃなくてナマズに関するものも鹿嶋でたまに見かけます。伝説がありそう。でも良くはわからない。そのうち勉強します。（ホントか？）

神社自体はすごく小振りで質素な印象でした。境内は木や草が生い茂って野生のままでした。伊勢神宮は清潔で明るいかんじだったし、明治神宮は親しみやすい公園風だし、神社もその土地のようすがうつるんだな。

ゴールデンウィーク後半は引っ越し後の家の片付け、草ぼーぼーの庭のこと、ご近所への挨拶（せんべいを持っていった）魚が豊富で野菜の安いスーパーを見つけることなどなどしました。

朋の麦わら帽子をかぶってみました。”売れない芸術家風”だそうです。

I put on Tomo's hat as a joke, and she insisted on taking a picture. Now it's up on the web for everyone to see. ...and on top of that she's making a joke that I look like some wanabe intellectual artist/hippy type (Actually, it's true that I'm a wanabe artist, but I would never use the words, "hippy" or "intellectual" to describe myself).

草ぼうぼうの小さなスペースに野菜苗を植えようとがんばってます。根の深い雑草が多くて大変。

５月の写真、火まつり

車で２時間ほどのところにある笠間市の「火祭り」にいきました。笠間は笠間焼で有名。

近隣に陶芸家がたくさん住んでいるようです。数十の窯元による陶器市は見ごたえがありました。窯業訓練所で「ろくろ体験」もしました。湯のみ２つ、コーヒーカップ、魚皿２枚、小鉢などを２千円ほどで購入。どれもきれいな色。割らないように大事に使おう。

A week or so after Tomo moved out here we went to a pottery festival held in a near by town.

今回のお祭りの中で最も気に入った作家の作品。３０代ぐらいの女性で、アフリカに旅行するのが大好きだそうです。のびのびしてて楽しそうですごくすてきな作品でした。

でっかい人の後方左にあるのがのぼり窯（たぶん）です。この日はお祭りなので窯の周囲には食べ物を売る白いテントがたくさん出ていました。

I have no idea why Tomo chose to include this photo. (She's talking about the kiln you can kind of see in the background above).

下の写真は小学校別の「仮面コンクール」の写真です。

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of pottery and found these colorful masks made by the local school children to be just as much (if not more) interesting.

This photo is proof that I actually ate that fish you see in the previous photo. You have to separate it from the bone as you go so it's actually a lot of work. (and at the end you end up with something that looks like a cartoon alley cat pulled out of the dumpster).

Unfortunately, the graffiti scene in Kashima is nowhere near the level of say... New York.

車がびゅんびゅん通る大きな国道から少し入ったところに祠がありました。大きな木のために作られたのでしょうか。国道が出来る前は静かな場所だったのだろうな。

This was a small shrine we stumbled across when we were killing time waiting for the cell phone shop to open. It's not far from the main road here, and is a nice reminder how far in the country we are.

朋は父の軽トラックに乗って３時間、神奈川から鹿嶋に引っ越してきました。首都高を荷物山盛りの軽トラで走るのは横に乗っているだけでも緊張しました。父はボロ新居のあちこち手直ししてくれ、庭を耕して苗の植え方を実演してくれ、ついでに鹿嶋の海で青のりをとったりしてくれ、神奈川に再び軽トラで帰っていきました。

Tomo finally moved out here with the help of her father.

...believe it or not, but we actually ate this.

... and thanks to him we actually have a proper vegetable garden.

浜辺の漁師風民家の入り口。夕方のきれいなひかり。

ちょうどよいサイズの流木を拾いました。

これで新居の表札を作ることにする。

That piece of driftwood Tomo's holding will eventually become the name plate in front of our house.

この日は何羽か死んだカモメが浜辺にうちあげられていました。

朋はまだ引越してきてません。週末になると東京からバスに乗って鹿島へぶらぶらしにやってきていました。

Tomo came out one weekend and we went to the beach (only about 5 minutes away from the house).

４月上旬鹿島神宮近くの一軒家にサムはひとりで引っ越して来ました。下旬までひとり暮らしです。慣れない土地で毎日ぶらりぶらりしながら写真を撮りました。
